Due to sudden obligations, Saturday’s post will appear tomorrow.

Thanks

I just finished reading “Boomsday” by Christopher Buckley, and I must say, it is one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking books I have ever read.

Some may know Buckley for his bestseller, “Thank You for Smoking” which was adapted in to a screenplay and made into a movie. Buckley fits into that small niche known as the political novelist. Other political pundits may express their opinions, predictions and knowledge in the form of nonfiction literature. Buckley however uses narratives to illustrate his point.

Boomsday was written to convey Buckley’s view and that other many others concerning our nation’s trillion-dollar deficit. Our current President and Congress have succeeded in its bi-partisan effort to make government as expansive and unnecessarily intrusive as possible, a feat that has required a lot of money the U.S. doesn’t have to spend. Between liberals and their entitlement programs and conservatives and their entitlement programs and tax cuts, it seems neither side is deeply concerned about reducing our national debt anytime soon.

Why is it that the two nonwhite candidates for the 2008 Presidential race feature an ethnic makeup which distances them from the large American ethnic groups from which they claim to be?

Example #1: U.S. Senator Barack Obama, whose mother was an American-born white from Kansas (whose ancestors owned slaves themselves) and whose father is a Kenyan immigrant.

I know the white-controlled mainstream media does not have the time or patience to view the black race in all its ethnic, cultural and historical diversity. It is far easier to simply lump all blacks in America together the way they do with Latinos.

Most African-Americans do not match the profile of Barack Obama. Unlike Obama, they are the descendants of West Africans who were captured and forced to come to the Thirteen Colonies and later, the United States as slaves. After the Civil War, the descendants of those slaves endured a hundred years of lynching, disenfranchisement and countless forms of discrimination.

The director of China’s State Food and Drug Administration has been charged with corruption and has been sentenced to death by the Chinese government. Apparently this political appointee was found accepting over US$1 million in bribes from Chinese manufacturers who wanted safety inspectors to look the other way while their below standard to potentially hazardous products reach American consumers.

It’s not often that I admire a communist country, but wouldn’t it be great if our government handed the death sentence to politicians and the heads of federal agencies who were found guilty of corruption, or at least gross negligence or incompetence?

That would keep politicians and their crony appointees on the straight and narrow and eliminate the monkey business that always seems to find a comfortable home in Washington.

It seems that the darling of the looney liberals, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, is seeing his approval rating dip amongst his own citizens.

Chavez recently denied the renewal of the broadcasting license of Radio Caracas Television (RCTV), a privately-owned TV station known for airing commentary and news which does not make Chavez appear to be the great liberator he wants everyone to believe he is.

Protesters came out to criticize the President’s successful attempt at censorship were greeted by national police. Dozens of demonstrators were arrested.

Chavez, who has never attempted to hide his socialist views, is infamous for criticizing U.S. President George Bush, calling him “the Devil” and “el asshole”. Naturally, the American left has embraced Chavez, taking photos with the Venezuelan leader and praising him as a revolutionary.

Taking a page from the play book of corporate criminals, street gangs and the Hells Angels, Chavez has engaged in a series of highly publicized acts of charity to poor Venezuelans and even poor Americans to cover up his true image as a tyrant. He used his country’s large oil reserves (all of which have been nationalized by the government) and sold some of it below market value as heating oil to slumlords in various U.S. cities, boasting that he is now providing for America’s poor.
