Entitlement To A Balanced Budget, Part 2
Posted by: Not The Only One in Government Corruption, 2008 Presidential Race, PoliticsFirst off, allow me to apologize for not blogging for the last two weeks. Looking for work and starting the final semester of my state-sponsored indoctrination has kept me busy these last two weeks. On to the blog…
Presidential elections are another thing the federal government wastes money on. I know this sounds unpatriotic, but as we saw in 2000, the massive expense of holding national elections meant nothing when the popular vote (won by Al Gore) was trumped by the electoral vote (won by George W. Bush).
It took me a few years to understand what exactly the electoral vote was, and I’m sure there are many Americans who still don’t understand the electoral college. Like most Americans, I was educated in a government school, so things like the electoral college (among many other subjects) were not adequately explained in the curriculum. All I was told in school was to register to vote when I turn 18, and to vote every year, because my vote counted.
Apparently in 2000, my vote and the votes of millions of other Americans didn’t mean a damn thing because they conflicted with the results of the electoral votes. It’s a very nice story, how Americans go to the polls and that the person elected to power reflects the interests of the majority. I wish that story was true. But seven years ago George Bush was ultimately selected by a handful of Americans, Supreme Court Justices, most of whom had been appointed to their positions by Bush’s father when he was President.
