Well said, James! I also think the "rescuers" get off on laying a guilt trip on everyone else for not submitting to their battery of questions and refusing to lay under their microscope of scrutiny.

I have nothing but contempt for stuck up animal shelter staff members. Animals stuck in cages all day long are denied the basic stimulation of having strangers walk through their rooms because they refuse to fill out an application.

Meanwhile, volunteers at these shelters are drilled about the importance of socializing the animals. I got my dog from the pound in San Francisco. Animal Care and Control is right across the street from the very impressive, very profitable SPCA--surprisingly, the SPCA had 1/20th of the dogs, and the staff was much more rude and condescending than the workers staffing the overcrowded pound.

I don't buy animals, but I hate arrogant rescues with a passion--I suggest getting your pets at animal care and control. They spay, license, and vaccinate your dog for a reasonable price (unlike the SPCA's ungodly costs). Plus there's no inquisition into your presumably depraved lifestyle. :)

Also, I think a fair number of "animal rescuers" are really just animal hoarders who can' t let their pets go.

Cindy,

I've heard stories like yours all too often. I know many people who have (human) children in their custody and their homes and whose pet adoption applications have been denied. If the people running these shelters want to be pricks and act like they're the only ones good enough to have a dog or cat, that's fine. But don't go around making everyone else feel like shit because they acquire a pet through a private sale. Craigslist is a great alternative for someone who has been rejected by the animal shelter mafia. Some owners' pets will have litters and will be happy to give them away, especially if the babies are mixed breeds.

Why shame people for not adopting a pet through a shelter and then be quick to turn away those who do? I think it's an ego boost for them, and if so, using the lives of stray animals to make yourself feel superior to others is really a subtle form of animal cruelty. Remember, those adoption fees help cover the shelters' overhead, so if they're paid or unpaid, the shelter workers have a vested interest in you at least try to jump through the hoops of the animal shelters. Say what you want about the free market, but at least Coke doesn't try to make you feel like shit for drinking Pepsi.

I have had a coworker go on and on about this whole do not buy from pet store or breeder ever since I have decided to get a dog. So I decided to "do the right thing" and so I went to the local shelters, met some extremely rude employees who are so full of themselves trying to make me feel like an idiot for telling them I prefer to have a dog that does not shed much. I did the whole application to adopt a dog only to be rejected.

I talked to a friend of mine who has a dog which he bought from a pet store and he told me all the frustrations and rejections that he went through when he tried to adopt a dog from the shelters. The people that work at these shelters are the most judgmental, know it all hypocrites you will ever meet.

Save yourself from the headaches and frustrations, visit your local pet store and buy the dog or cat you want without being treated like dirt for wanting to adopt an animal. Real funny how they want you to donate and make you believe they are overcrowded with animals when they reject responsible, eligible people. I for one will never put foot in a shelter again. I do not support shelters the hypocrites!

I, too, have a very pit-bull who stands out as the most adoring animal I have ever owned. Soon, a brand new dog breed will come together for that media to blast, as they have accomplished rotties and dobies in earlier many years. Unfortunate that media sensationalism breeds so much inaccurate facts.

Thanks for reading.

Since you have nothing left to respond with other than personal attacks, I'll have to assume you cannot defend your position on this issue. I'm guessing you're the loser making everyone feel guilty for not adopting animals from a shelter. The shelter that in turns probably denies most of the people who apply for adoption. Now THAT is pathetic.

And no, I don't think being Latino, libertarian or a New Yorker offers me a special or unique perspective. If I thought it did, the name of this blog would be I Am The Only One. Try thinking before you write next time, OK?

And trust me, I couldn't give two shits if you ever read this response. Last month 300 visitors stopped by this blog. Granted, I'm not pulling in Huffington Post numbers, but it still means I'm keeping this blog up for someone else besides myself. Or you.

Going back to the issue in question, the fact that these animal shelters snobbishly reject so many adoption applicants keeps pet stores and puppy mills in business, and ensures that many shelter pets will ultimately remain in doggy jail until they are put to death. By people like you.

You did leave Long Island? I guess that's why the property values started going up again over there.

I can't believe you spent this much time writing back to me. Just read parts of your rant.

Kinda pathetic. Do you get off thinking that people find your blog important enough to read it?

Do you think that being a latino from NYC offers you a special perspective?

Eh, hermano?

You reinforced why I left Long Island. thanks.

Write a few paragraphs in response.

I may read them in a year or 2. or not.

See ya.
