Okay, I'll give you that one. His attempt at accomplishing this should be applauded, even if Cuba's resources are so meager they can only afford to offer substandard medical care.

The only concern I have is that I'm always hearing about two hospital systems: one for foreigners and Party members and another, shabbier one for the rest of the population. Never having been to Cuba, I wouldn't know about this for sure but I've always read about this and read testimony from those who deflect to the United States. If it is true, that kind of soils any noble element to Cuba's subsidized health care system.

I am amazed at the purposeful abandonment of commom sense, logic and the only possibly correct interpretation of all of world history, i.e. the human condition, heart, mind and soul will always strive to be free, when I read or hear comments by people who support socialist and particularly communist views. The big lie is that for nearly 50 years Castro has been able to dupe through propaganda and coercion (Cubans have no internet, limited radio and virtually no free flow of outside information) the Cuban people into blaming Western civilization for their sickening impoverishment Of course the U.S. embargo is economically destructive to Cuba, but it is a false scapegoat used cleverly by a narcissistic, brutal dictator to keep his subjects fuming at America instead of overthrowing a frozen-in-time totalitarian regime. Is it not true that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"? Those that believe the U.S. embargo, non-diplomatic recognition and other policies toward Cuba are to blame for Cuba's woes are like an errant child that is only upset at getting caught in an offense, but not the nature of the offense itself. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? There is an ideological and principled underpinning of U.S. policies towards Cuba emanating from Castro being a staunch dictatorial communist with thousands of egregious human rights abuses. He implores the U.S. for normalized political and economic relations but never addresses any of the root causes of the disagreements, and then blames his own failures on others and his people buy into it, all in the name of the revolution. Remember Castro's near immediate nationalization of U.S. business and property and the near capitulation to a nuclear WWIII in 1962. What about the Mariel boatlift in 1980 and the decades of oppression and killings of his own people all while allying his country with any and all enemies of the U.S. and bashing America in every speech. These are the reasons for the embargo, and history will blame the unfortunate results for the Cuban people at the feet of Castro.

Hi I just stumbled on to this site I dont have any Fidel jokes but I do have a CIA joke its The Bay of Pigs.

It is funny how blind people are about the good that is done in Cuba I wonder how the infant mortality rate is lower in Cuba than in some states of the good old us of a, and how is it that Cuba has more doctors per head of population than the usa and it has universal health care from birth despite the usa banning the sale of both medicines and even Braile machines for the blind because of the embargo.
If you neo/con/libs or what ever banner you hide behind realy want to change Cuba call for the embargo to be lifted you all seem to favour free trade .
and yes I have been there on 2 occasions and yes I would move there it is so refreshing to walk down a street and not have Macdonalds or Starbucks on every corner.

@Black Water: Chuck Norris jokes? Those are almost as bad as the egalitarian society Castro pretends to have created in Cuba.

@Ruby Jones: I agree. Fidel Castro, like Stalin, Hitler and countless others will always be an icon of history. Not to compare Castro to the extreme evil of Hitler and Stalin, just saying that bad people as well as good will always have their chance to make their mark on history.
