It seems that as the United States won the Cold War, we became more like our Soviet rivals than we'd care to admit, and gradually embraced many of the same socialist policies (some states more than others, of course!) that brought down the Soviet Union almost two decades ago. Yes, unfortunately, New York City is not the great, bustling magnet and great thinkers and industrious minds and bodies it was when my grandfather immigrated there over 80 years ago. It seems that as the United States won the Cold War, we became more like our Soviet rivals than we’d care to admit, and gradually embraced many of the same socialist policies (some states more than others, of course!) that brought down the Soviet Union almost two decades ago.

I think the word you are looking for is brain drain, and that’s exactly what’s going on in New York.
